Risky Business

A cute story, but way too much liar, liar pants on fire..
This is a cute, breezy story. The writing style is pleasant. But the fact that the two main characters spent an awful lot of time lying to everyone bugged me. The hero seemed like a good guy. He could've been a GREAT hero, but the fact that he could lie so quickly and easily without batting an eye or feeling any remorse made him less than heroic in my eyes. His heart was in the right place-helping the heroine and all- but that whopper he went along with about being a doctor helping the poor in some South American country was a little too much for me. I might have gone along with all the lying if the main characters had eventually retracted their string of whoppers to EVERYONE they'd misled and then apologized to them. The kind of bald-faced lying these two did in this particular situation is never truly justified- even in romance fantasy-land.

Not Bad At All.....
This is the first romance novel I've been able to read through from beginning to end in a long time. Nothing unusual about the story. Just light, breezy read on a Sunday afternoon. And both lead characters were likeable. Something that's harder and harder to find in the genre, IMHO.

Sexy, funny, wonderful writing
Six months before, Jack Kellerman spent a wonderful weekend with a beautiful woman--who vanished from his bed while he was sleeping. When he sees Rachel on a Denver street, Jack can't resist following--and pushing himself into her life. The bond he felt went way beyond sex (although sex was certainly an important part of it), and Jack needs to see where it will take them.

Rachel Westover pretended to be married to Jack to help get her job at a prestigious Denver architectural firm. But she never expected to have to deal with him again. When Jack shows up at her office just as the staff is heading for a retreat at a mountain resort, Jack manages to wangle his way into the group--and she can't exactly tell her boss that she lied about the husband. But it doesn't take long before Jack starts wangling his way back into her heart as well. And Rachel knows exactly how dangerous that could be. She needs to be the good girl--and knows how dangerous taking a chance can be. And Jack is nothing but dangerous--fun in a guilt-ridden package.

Author Jane Sullivan (who also writes under the name Jane Graves) writes a sexy and emotionally satisfying novel with flashes of laugh-out-loud comic genius. Jack is all fun and games on the surface, but has a serious side that finds its mate in Rachel. Sullivan does a wonderful job showing a parallel growth in sexual and emotional closeness between these two damaged characters--leading up to the inevitable disaster where each must take stock of their lives and decide whether they dare take a chance with their greatest fears.

This may be Sullivan's best yet--and that's saying a lot.

That Nelson!
Published in Paperback by Amer Education Pub (May, 1995)
Authors: Tom Sullivan and Anne Kennedy
Average review score:

That Nelson!
I believe the story was too advanced for the intended age group. On a majority of the pages, the paragraphs were too lengthy; by the time you or others would have finished reading it, the child/children would have gotten bored looking at the same picture for so long. Also, some of the wording was too complex for kids to understand; a lot of the words that were chosen were too big. I will say, however, that the story had an excellent point behind it. It explains to children that some people will, in fact, be different from them and they should not be discriminated against; the plot was an excellent choice.

My Opinion on That Nelson
I liked this book a lot. In the beginning, Nelson was pretty bad, but it wasn't his fault. It was because he was curious. Next it was Thanksgiving and he couldn't resist the smell of the turkey so he got into it and ate it! The family yelled at him. They said it was good to be curious, but he had to put it to good use. Then he had an anxiety attack. The trainer taught Nelson how to be a seeing eye dog so he could help a blind man. A funny part was when Nelson didn't just look at a table leg, he had to see how far his teeth could go through it. Something I learned was how a seeing eye dog is trained. I would give this book a rating of 100 bones!

My Review on That Nelson!
What kind of dog do you suppose that Nelson is? He's a guide dog with lots of curiosity. His first Thanksgiving, when his family goes away he can't seem to control his curiosity about the turkey cooling on the counter. Later, whenever his family goes out he goes with them and he wears a special jacket with an important message written on it. Nelson's family has to drop him off at a training center so he can be trained to be a guide dog. And then he goes to the kennel so his trainer can pick him up to be trained the next day. Nelson got picked up by his new trainer and was curious about him. Nelson had to learn to be obedient. It was tough for Nelson the first few times they worked together. Trainer teaches Nelson to become obedient and takes him to places that he hasn't been before, and when he takes him into restaurants Nelson has to learn to not eat the food that Trainer has on the table. When Nelson is trained and has done everything he is supposed to be trained to do, he is paired up with Tom, who is a blind person. Tom and Nelson end up being real good friends and Nelson helps Tom a lot. When Nelson graduates from his training school, his family who helped him through his puppy life came too. They brought him all sorts of treats, but Nelson doesn't take the treats. Can you guess why? That Nelson! I really loved this book and I think you should read it.

Uniquely Yours : Creative Ideas for your Wedding Ceremony
Published in Ring-bound by Dream Concepts Publishing Inc. (31 May, 1999)
Authors: Gail Oliver and Gisele Sullivan
Average review score:

It's got some great ideas
But...it's a way smaller book than I was expecting. I was hoping for this great big book of ideas, but was disapointed to get a book thats only about 100 pages or so. And unfortunately, it does have ideas in it that I've already planned to use in my ceremony. Good is, it does have things I will use that I didn't think up before. Buy it if you really can't come up with ideas of your own, it will help the creative flow.

A Bride's must have!
Gail Oliver and Gisele Sullivan have managed to organize wonderful and creative ideas into one compact resource, full of lots of inspiration for any Bride! This book gives you suggestions, that would normally take you months of sifting through bridal magazines that might only give you one or two suggestions you like. Whereas "Uniquely Yours" is full of, simple to elaborate, personal, heartfelt touches that anyone can apply! The ideas range from bride's on a low/high budget, to sky's the limit! I used one of the ideas for getting the bride and groom to kiss at my own wedding and it was HUGE success!

Original Wedding Ideas!
This book is great! Lots of really original ideas on how to do things with an extra special touch. I loved the section that offered different ways to walk down the aisle with your wedding party. I highly recommend it. Much better than any ideas I was getting from bridal magazines or web sites.

A-3 Skywarrior in Action (Aircraft, No 148)
Published in Paperback by Squadron/Signal Pubns (January, 1995)
Authors: Jim Sullivan, Don Greer, Tom Tullis, and Joe Sewell
Average review score:

A-3 Skywarrior
The A-3 in action series book is 50 pages jam-packed with very rare photos and methodically steps through the history of the "Whale". The A-3 started out as the Navy's strategic nuclear delivery platform and due to it's size (large but within limits of the CV) routinely operated off of carriers and subsequently went on to fill other vital roles. This book details the design, flight test, and development as an A-3A, A-3B, Tanker, Trainer, E-Recon, Jammer, Photo-Recon, Tanker-Jammer, and FEWSG ERA-3B birds. It has sketches, photos, line drawings, specifications, full color photos, cockpit pictures, overseas operations, ECM/Weapon blisters and so on and so forth. The only thing the book doesn't have in great detail is the use of the Whale as a testbed (it's current job). This is a must have book for anyone who flew on the A-3 Skywarrior.

Cool pictures of the Whale!
This is a pretty good summary of the changes the A3D went through. (I would like the In- Action series better if the production quality was a little cleaner.)

If you ever flew on a Whale you should get this book

And if you want to know the meaning of versatility in aircraft design, you could hardly beat a study of the A3 and A4!

African American Inventors (Black Stars Series)

What a great book! I highly recommend this book if you have ever wondered where can I find information about African American Inventors. I found that the information was very insightful and informative to both myself and to my son. The content is easy to read and allows the reader to see (if you will) first hand just how difficult it was (is) for minorities to overcome ignorance in order to enhance the betterment of mankind through technology!

In a nutshell this book is excellent resource for all students of all races and creeds. African American Inventors is also a great book for young inventors who may need a little encouragement and hope in a pseudo biased world.

Finally, as a parent I give this book two thumbs up!

Antitrust
Published in Hardcover by Casenotes Pub Co (July, 2003)
Authors: Sullivan and Hovenkamp
Average review score:

Having trouble in your antitrust course? Buy this book!!
I was a good law student, but had big trouble in my antitrust course trying to grasp some of the basic concepts. This book helped me immensely, but is not a substitute for reading cases and struggling to understand what's going on.

This book will give you the black-letter law you can use as well as helpful explanations of the leading cases.

Basic start reading for the begginer
This book is both a begginer's obligatory reading and a consultation source for the practising lawyer dealing with antitrust issues. It is also quoted in many foreign books about the subject, for example "Os fundamentos do Antitruste" written by a Brazilian professor (Dr. Paula A. Forgioni) also because it is one of the most comprehensive existing/available in the market. In my opinion a book needed in any reasonable office's library. As I have read some parts of it borrowing from a coleague I will by one for myself.

The Baby Secret (Harlequin Intrigue, 546)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1900)
Author: Joyce Sullivan
Average review score:

Engaging romantic suspense
Amnesia victim, Paige Roberts, woke to find that she couldn't remember the last 6 weeks of her life, she was pregnant, and had no idea who the father was. All she had to piece her lapse in time together with was a trail of receipts from a trip across Canada and what remained of her research.

Investigating a string of corporate abductions, Paige had traveled across Canada but found herself witnessing an unspeakable crime. Now, with no recollection of her travels, Paige decides to make the trip a second time in search of answers.

But instead of answers, Paige finds herself faced with more questions and a drawn to Matt, her mysterious new neighbor, who had insisted upon accompanying her. But, as they travel, it becomes increasingly clear that someone wants Paige dead. But who? And why?

"The Secret Baby" has some interesting storyline twists and a hero any woman would be proud to call her own. Ms. Sullivan is a talented storyteller

Exciting Romantic Mystery
Joyce Sullivan makes a welcome return to form with her latest Intrigue, "The Baby Secret." An equal mix of mystery and romance, Sullivan takes readers on an action-packed ride that is sure to thrill. With a very scary opening scene, she sets up a terrifying premise and a mystery full of twists, turns, and danger around every bend. The Canadian setting is used well to take readers on a coast-to-coast tour that is always a welcome change of pace. More important, Paige and Matt's relationship develops nicely, offering moments both moving and passionate, and by the end it is clear they are made for each other. The final chapter where they find their happy ending is beautiful. And I remember my own pregnancy well enough to admire Paige's creative choice of weapon in the climax. :)

The only problem I had was with the boring title. They could have called it "Obligatory Baby/Amnesia Book #..." at that rate. It also doesn't reflect the book too well. Ms. Sullivan's first title she had listed on her web page was much better. The covers may not impress. What is between them is sure to.

Best Friends Are for Keeps
Published in Paperback by Review & Herald Pub Assn (May, 1993)
Author: Karen Sullivan Williams
Average review score:

I like this book!
I gave this book a 4 because I really like the story and what it's based on. But I don't like how they orginized it and they kind of skip around.

This is a story about a 3 girls named Tiffany Ami and Jenny. This is how it all starts, the first bell rang it was almost over all of summer vacation almost over 4 minuets left and everyone was going crazy. Tiffany wasn't excited about it either, well thats what she felt like last week she always changes her mind.

But now she was excited a matter a fact since there was only 2 minuets left she was very excited. The reason why is because of Ami she nadn't seen her all year. Ami was her best friend but she was out of town the whole year so she had no one to play with well ecept for Jenny if it weren't for her then she would of had no one to play with. The weekend came and Jenny asked if she could come over and Tiffany said "yes". But then Ami (her best friend) asked to. Ami was shocked to hear that Jenny was comming over instead of her. Ami got really mad and got out of control. That weekend Tiffany and Jenny became good friends. But Tiffany couldn't forget about Ami.

Summer break came and it was all the same once again. Tiffany had one best friend and Jenny also had a friend named Tiffany.

The basic idea for this story is even though you havn't seen your best fri end for a long time and you make new friends best friends are for keeps.

A book that shows the true power of friendship!
This book is really one big dilema! You will enjoy reading it because there is always an exciting new twist. It also has a deeper meaning. It will show you how three girls learned the true power of friendship. I really loved it and I know you will too!

The Comeback Girl (Those Sullivan Sisters)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (01 February, 2003)
Author: Debra Salonen
Average review score:

Number 3 in the Sullivan Sisters Trilogy
The Comeback Girl by Debra Salonen

The third book in her three part series of the Sullivan sisters, THE COMEBACK GIRL is the story of Kristin, the triplet that didn't quite live up to their small town's expectations. The three sisters were practically raised by the town of Gold Creek, but mostly by their great aunt Ida Jane, who by the third novel is having health problems, including memory loss and other signs of Alzheimer's.

In the mean time, Kristin has come back to town to stay, after having left for Oregon over ten years ago. The reason for her departure was learned in the previous installment, when at the end of the book Kristin arrives in town with her son Zach. No one knew about Zach, let alone that Kristin had a child in the first place. It was a complete shock to everyone, but as families go, the two other triplets Jenny and Andi, along with their husbands and their beloved Ida Jane, prepare for Kristin and Zach's arrival and welcome them both to the family.

As Kristin tries to make a new life for herself and Zach in the town that initially drove her away, she becomes reacquainted with an old love, Donnie Grimaldi, the deputy sheriff. He too has a son from a previous marriage, but is now raising Lucas on his own with very little help from the ex-wife. Donnie never stopped loving Kristin, and knowing that she needs some help, he has a plan that could help the both of them, and their sons.

THE COMEBACK GIRL was yet another enjoyable novel by Debra Salonen. I didn't feel, though, that it was as good as the other two in the series, but the book redeemed itself by the end of the story. I have a feeling that Salonen will be writing more about the sisters and the fictional town of Gold Creek, and I will be looking forward to reading them.

Terrific series finale! Very highly recommended
Twelve years have not erased the bitter memories of Gold Creek for Kristen Sullivan. In an effort to protect her son, Kristen never told Zach of the family and town that they left behind. Certainly, she never told him about his biological father, who does not know of his existence until they return to Gold Creek. Consequently, Zach responds with detachment and anger to the changes in their lives. Worse, his father threatens to sue for custody. Moreover, Kristen's high school boyfriend Donnie Grimaldo refuses to be forgotten.

After Kristen's betrayal, Donnie married someone else. Jaded by his subsequent divorce, and disillusioned by his work, Donnie dreams of becoming an Air Marshal and making a real difference. But his ex-wife's flaky decisions and new husband interfere with plans, and suddenly their son will continue to be his responsibility. Donnie needs a wife to care for his troubled ten-year-old son while he is gone, and Kristen needs the stability of a marriage to man like Donnie to win a custody battle. But a marriage of convenience may be too limiting for two people who once loved each other deeply, despite their protestations.

Author Debra Salonen concludes her Those Sullivan Sisters series with an evocative tale in THE COMEBACK GIIRL. Of the sisters, Kristen faces the most difficult challenges by confronting the father of her child and his mother, even as she also faces the man who still holds her heart. Her relationship with her son, once idyllic, now extremely troubled, deftly portrays the most heart rending aspects of motherhood with grace. Kristen and Donnie are wonderful together as they rediscover life on a more mature level. Aunt Ida's inevitable decline adds a touching realism as well. It is the struggles of the both sons, however, that truly add a punch to the tale with their struggles of identity, need for attention, and challenges of integrating families. Indeed, Gold Creek has become a wonderfully real place that readers will deeply miss. A richly textured novel of surprising complexity and emotional depth, THE COMEBACK GIRL comes very highly recommended.

The Complete Plays of Gilbert and Sullivan
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1936)
Author: Arthur Seymour, Sir Sullivan
Average review score:

I Still remember My Mother's Old 78's
Back in prehistoric times when records were brittle things and only came in one speed, 78 RPM's, one of my mother's favorite albums was "H.M.S. Pinafore." She played it frequently. Too young to understand the satire, I was attracted by the catchy music. I loved to hear the captain sing "I am the Captain of the Pinafore," immediately followed by the response of the chorus. This plus "Poor Little Buttercup" and "The Ruler of the Queen's Navee" made a fan of me for life.

Several years later, and after having attended performances of several of these comic operas, I began to read Gilbert's lyrics. I must confess that I got much greater enjoyment out of reading lyrics that were from Gilbert and Sullivan performances that I had attended. I think that must be because neither the words nor the music are nearly as enjoyable in the absence of the other.

I have read that Gilbert and Sullivan had a very stormy relationship. I'm glad that they managed to work together as often as they did because they really complemented one another. What they accomplished as a team speaks for itself in the continued performance of so many of their works over a hundred years after they were first performed.

I have an older hardback of THE COMPLETE PLAYS and I found some humor in the following which may have been corrected in later copies. The book starts off with Chronological Biographies of each man. In Gilbert's it states< "first meeting with Arthur Sullivan autumn of 1870." In Sullivan's we find the following. "Met W. S. Gilbert 1871." Something metaphysical afoot perhaps.

In summary, in my opinion, the works in this book, while certainly enjoyable reading, were really meant to be performed in order to give maximum enjoyment. Others may very well disagree with this opinion and I see nothing wrong with that.

A most excellant book
This book is full of musical plays and the scripts are worded well for possible performance. The only problem is that the sheet music is missing and from experience it is a headache to find but other than that it is a good book that stimulates the imagination.
